As a Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC), I work with a lot of different clients. They come from a variety of backgrounds, industries, and experience levels. But, the two things they all seemingly have in common is:
- they want to work remotely AND
- avoid scams
And who could blame them? Job searches are tough enough as is. When you through potential scams into the mix it becomes even more difficult. That’s why I tend to recommend companies that are well known, have a great reputation, and readily hire remote job seekers, like you.
So, if you’re on the hunt for remote work but don’t know where to start your search, check out these 7 trustworthy companies that hire remote workers.
1. Century Link
Century Link is a major service provider for both homes and businesses. In fact, you may even use them for your home internet, phone, or even TV.
As a big-name internet provider, Century Link routinely hires employees to support their many customers. There are even work from home opportunities across the US.
The two main remote jobs at Century Link involve Contact Center and Sales. But, you can also find Product Analyst, System Engineer, and many other career paths too.

2. O’Reilly Auto Parts
The last time I needed a new car battery, I headed over to my local O’Reilly Auto Parts. You too may have visited one of their locations before for everything from bulbs and wiper blades to batteries and belts.
And while O’Reilly Auto Parts hires locally for their many retail locations, there are also opportunities to work remotely in its Corporate Division.

3. GrubHub

Opportunities at GrubHub go far beyond delivering drivers. In fact, GrubHub hires across the globe and even has remote positions available from time to time.

4. Spotify
Another billion-dollar industry, that happens to be remote-forward, is music streaming. A recent report from Tech Crunch estimates streaming services account for nearly 50% of revenue across the entire music industry!

No Scams. Real Remote Jobs.

Do This First For An Easy Remote Job Search
So, you want to become a remote worker? I get it. I’ve been working remotely for nearly a decade. (And I’ve never looked back!). In my years as a remote worker, I’ve worked full time, part time, and even freelanced.
Today, I work as a Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC). I specialize in helping remote job seekers, like you, kick their cubicles to the curb.
Needless to say, I know what it takes to become a remote worker. And I readily share tips and tricks on how to ditch your daily commute so you too can reap the benefits of remote work.
Remember, a remote job search is a lot different than a traditional one. But, don’t worry, it’s not impossible to land remote work.
Any new job search is best launched with a plan in mind. And, the very first step in any remote job search plan should be narrowing down your search to only include the right positions for you.
Determine What Type Of Remote Worker You Are
Often, I work with career coaching clients that want to work remotely so badly that they insist they’ll do anything. That is, it doesn’t matter what the job title is or nature of work as long as it doesn’t require a commute.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a great job search strategy — especially as an aspiring remote worker. You see, not all remote jobs are created equal. There are full time and part time employee positions, freelance gigs, and contract jobs too. You can even come across seasonal and temporary remote jobs.
Employee positions are different than freelancing and working as an independent contractor has unique requirements too.
That’s why, before you even start a remote job search, you need to determine what type of remote worker you are.
Employee? Freelance? Independent Contractor?
When it comes to remote work, positions typically fall into one of three categories:
- Employee
- Freelance
- Independent Contractor
They all have different benefits (and drawbacks) that you should consider. Once you weigh the pros and cons, you can confidently figure out which type of remote work is best suited to you and your circumstances. That way, you can streamline your job search and focus only on the type of work that’s right for you. But how do you figure out if you should pursue employee positions, freelancing, or contract gigs?
Employee Status As A Remote Worker
As a remote employee, you are expected to keep set ‘office hours’ and have a quiet home office in which to work. Telecommuting as an employee is very much like working a traditional office job. But, instead of driving to work, you get to work from your comfy home office.
Employees receive set pay and may be eligible for benefits, like health insurance and paid time off.
You should consider employee positions if you value steady pay, company-sponsored perks, and set schedules. If you need something that is flexible or allows you to work with constraints (like kids in your care), employee positions just won’t work.
Freelancing As A Remote Worker
When you work as a freelancer, you sell services to clients on a per project basis or for a set amount of time. Essentially, you are your own boss when you freelance.
With your ‘boss status,’ you become responsible for everything — finding clients, managing your schedule, pricing your services, handling payments (and more).
Freelancing affords a ton of flexibility. You can work when you want, for how much you want, and for whom you choose. This is a great option for anyone who has caretaker responsibilities or wants to create their own schedule.
Independent Contractor Positions
While employee positions and freelancing are on the complete opposite ends of the spectrum as a remote worker, being an independent contractor is a little mix of both.
As an independent contractor, or IC for short, you contract with a company and they supply the work. Typically, your contract is for a set amount of work each week or for a predetermined time.
For example, if you contract as a transcriptionist, you might be expected to complete at least 3 hours of audio each week.
As a contractor, you bill for your services and receive payment in set intervals. However, you don’t receive any benefits and taxes ARE NOT withheld from your pay. That means you will have to keep track of earnings and pay taxes accordingly.
Working as an IC is great for anyone who wants steady work and flexibility. Remember, as an IC, you don’t have to find clients like a freelancer does and you don’t have to keep office hours like an employee.
Streamline Your Job Search
I know it’s tempting to say, “I want to work from home. It doesn’t matter what the job is.” But, trust me, those are the most unproductive and frustrating remote job searches.
Often, I get career coaching clients that have tried the “I’ll do anything approach” with no success. After they redirect their efforts and focus on the right type of work — whether it’s employee, freelance or contract — they routinely make progress and find jobs fast.
But, remember, it’s not about finding any old remote job. You should strive to find the right type of work for you. And to find your ideal remote work arrangement, you need to first decide which type of remote worker you are.

5 Must-Take Career Quizzes To Help You Find Your Dream Job
Career quizzes are great. In fact, as a Certified Professional Career Coach, I highly recommend them to all my clients. And, I’m not alone.
According to BBC Capital, taking online career quizzes offers benefits like:
- Career clarity
- Skills and interests identification
- Job search motivation
Personally, I find that these assessment tools give job seekers insight into who they are and what they value. These career ideals, as they’re called, can lead to overall job happiness and satisfaction.
In fact, knowing your career ideals can help you actually identify your dream job based on values and criteria that matter most to you.
If you’re feeling lost, stuck, or unfulfilled professionally, take one of these 5 free career quizzes. You’ll learn something new about yourself and uncover career paths you never previously considered.
1. O*Net Interests Profiler
The O*Net Interests Profiler is a 60-question, free assessment provided by the United States Department of Labor.
This tool is best for job seekers who are ready for a change or don’t quite yet know what they want to do. The profiler will help you identify your unique interests and how those interests fit into the professional realm.
Once completed, the Interests Profiler provides Job Zones and related Careers that closely align with your interests.
2. My Plan
When picking a career, many of us fail to identify our values first. Instead, we rely on factors like pay, location, and job title to guide us.
These superficial requirements might explain why as much as 85% of us don’t like our jobs, according to a recent Gallup poll.
So, how do you actually feel engaged at work? You pick a career based on your values.
My Plan offers a variety of career quizzes, including personality, interests inventory, and skills profiler. However, my personal favorite (and the only free option) is the Values Assessment.
This 20-question test should only take you about 12 minutes — but can yield tons of valuable insight. After taking it, you’ll learn what your underlying needs and motivations are. Plus, you’ll be able to determine if your current or prospective career path matches your values.
You’ll even be given a list of over 700 careers ranked by how well they match your values results!
3. Career Quizzes: The Big Five Personality
If I asked you what your personality was, what would you say? Most people define their personality as either extroverted or introverted. But, personalities go far beyond that — especially when it comes to work.
That’s why Truity developed the Big Five Personality assessment based on the highly-regarded Five Factor Model.
Upon taking the test, you’ll find out where you stand on five major components of personality:
- Openness
- Conscientiousness
- Agreeableness
- Extraversion
- Neuroticism
This 60-question assessment should only take about 10 minutes to complete. Once done, you’ll have an in-depth look into your personality and how it impacts you professionally.
4. Holland Occupational Themes
When it comes to career quizzes, I highly recommend all job seekers take the Holland Occupational Themes assessment.
This personality-based test, specifically focuses on career and vocational choices. It’s a great starting point if you’re not sure what your true occupational interests are.
The Occupational Themes were developed by Dr John Holland. He loosely breaks down career aptitude into six broad categories:
- Realistic
- Investigative
- Artistic
- Social
- Enterprising
- Conventional
After completing the test, you’ll discover your primary career interests. You can even view a list of careers that align with your top interests.
5. The Princeton Review Career Quiz
You may already be familiar with The Princeton Review. It’s the large college-admissions company that offers college prep, admissions resources, and more.
The Princeton Review also has a number of education assessments available, including career quizzes.
You can take their short 24-question quiz in just a few minutes. The test aims to measure your career style and interests based on four colors:
- Red – Expediting
- Green – Communicating
- Blue – Planning
- Yellow – Administrating
Your career interests describe the types of job duties and responsibilities you’re drawn to. These are important to understand if you want to stay motivated in your way.
Your career style identify your work strengths. When your work strengths are appreciated, you feel greater content and satisfaction in your career.
The Princeton Review will even provide a list of recommended careers based on your interests and style.
Fun Fact: I’m a “yellow” for both career style and interests, which is pretty spot on!
Career Quizzes And Your Results
I often ask my career coaching clients to take at least one career quiz. These assessments are great tools that can help you plan a career change or develop a career plan.
But, remember, they’re just that — tools. Please take career quizzes with some caution. Do not rely on them solely to help you decide which professional path to take.
Instead, use a combination of career quizzes, research, and informational interviews to truly identify your ideal career path.
Remember, it’s one thing to be employed. It’s another to be happily employed. I always strive to steer job seekers down the path that leads to greater satisfaction and happiness.
